Teams That Play Together, Excel Together

What if one of the best ways to build a high-performing team wasn’t another meeting, presentation or traditional corporate retreat—but play?

At Ignite Tech Play, we believe that teams that play together can work better together. Our technology-driven corporate team-building experiences take employees away from their everyday roles and put them around a table with a completely different mission: build a robot, solve the challenge and get ready to compete.

Why Adults Need to Play, Too

Play isn’t only for children. Research into teamwork and workplace performance points to the importance of shared goals, trust, communication and psychological safety. The American Psychological Association notes that psychologically safe workplaces allow employees to contribute ideas, discuss problems, ask for help and take appropriate interpersonal risks—all behaviours that can support innovation and team success.

Research on collaborative teams similarly emphasizes shared goals, effective communication, clear roles and mutual respect as important ingredients in successful teamwork.

Play can create an environment where people get to practise many of these behaviours naturally.

What Happens When You Put a Robot on the Table?

This is where our robotics team-building activities become interesting.

Instead of thinking about emails, deadlines, meetings and everyday workplace responsibilities, participants are presented with a compressed challenge: work together to build, program and prepare a robot to accomplish a mission.

Suddenly, the focus changes.

People start exchanging ideas. Someone begins building. Someone else studies the challenge. Another teammate tests the robot. Teams quickly form alliances, divide responsibilities, troubleshoot problems and adapt when something doesn’t work.

The robot gives everyone a single, shared objective.

Research on teams has found that shared goals can help direct attention and effort while encouraging coordination, cooperation and mutual support. That closely reflects what we observe during our robotics experiences: participants become absorbed in solving the challenge together.

Purposeful Disconnection Through Play

For people working in demanding, high-performance environments, an interactive challenge can also provide a valuable change of mental context.

For a short period, the regular workday disappears. Participants are thinking with their hands, experimenting, laughing, problem-solving and communicating face-to-face. Rather than simply talking about teamwork, they are actively practising it.

The combination of collaboration, friendly competition and a clear mission creates an opportunity for colleagues to interact differently from how they normally would at work.

And that can reveal something important: your job title matters much less when there’s a robot waiting to be built.

Building Better Teams Through Play

A great corporate team-building activity should be more than entertainment. It should create shared experiences that employees can carry back into the workplace.

At Ignite Tech Play, our robotics challenges are designed to encourage communication, collaboration, creative problem-solving, leadership, adaptability and team cohesion.

Because sometimes the best way to reconnect a team is to give everyone permission to disconnect from work—and play.
